The hilarious tale of a tiger whose terrible teeth cause everyone to say 'Phooey!' — until one brave trip to the dentist changes everything.
"My darling girl. My soul mate. My little human in a dog suit. Frankly the best friend a girl could ever have."
Maddie was a tiny white chihuahua with an enormous personality, truly terrible breath, and an absolute talent for making friends — human, heron, squirrel and otherwise. For eleven years she walked the Grand Western Canal behind our home in Tiverton, Devon, making every creature along the towpath feel like they'd been chosen.
She inspired Eric's smelly teeth. She inspired the canal stories. Her face is the logo. Her paw print is tattooed on Anna's arm — and stamped inside every copy of Eric that leaves the house. She is woven into every word written under the name Maddie Mae.
Maddie didn't just inspire books. She was the story.
🐾 Maddie · 2013–2024Anna Mae is a Devon-based author who writes stories about the extraordinary things that happen in ordinary lives — love that arrives unexpectedly, loss that reshapes everything, and the quiet moments of courage that change the course of a story.
From adult fiction exploring grief and second chances, to children's picture books about smelly-toothed tigers, Anna writes across genres with the same warmth, humour and emotional honesty that readers have come to love.
Based in Tiverton, Devon, Anna walks the Grand Western Canal most mornings — usually with a coffee, always with a story forming. The canal, its creatures, and its quiet magic find their way into everything she writes.
She is represented on the page by her beloved chihuahua Maddie, whose paw print appears in every copy of Eric the Smelly-Toothed Tiger, and whose spirit runs through the 'Tails from the Canal Bank' series currently in progress.
Anna is currently working on two new projects — the next instalment in her adult fiction and the first book in a brand new children's series inspired by Maddie's canal walks and the remarkable creatures she met along the way.
